Does Insurance Cover Chiropractic Care?

Dr. Gregg Rubinstein who practices at 57th Street Chiropractic in New York City explains the ins and outs of the dealing with insurance and how people come to find his services:Does insurance cover chiropractic care? Insurance contributes to most people’s care. One thing that’s important to understand is that there are different types of care in the chiropractor’s office.  There is acute pain care, corrective care, and then wellness care. Everything with insurance is pain-based. Insurance companies will pay for enough to get the patient out of pain or that they deem medically necessary. Insurance companies do not pay for wellness care or maintenance care.  They only pay for the care required to get you out of the crisis.  I have to submit charts and more charts. And they make the decision if the care is medically necessary. In my office, I don’t make my care recommendations based on insurance. If I think you need 15 visits, but you are only allowed 10 visits by your insurance, I will not tell you that you need 10 visits. You need 15, whether insurance supports the decision or not. I don’t make recommendations that are less than ideal for that individual patient. How do patients find you?Patients find our office in a variety of ways.  The number one and the most rewarding way is by direct referral from other doctors and our existing patients.  We get many referrals from other medical doctors in the community because we’ve worked hard to establish relationships with orthopedists, neurologists and general practitioners in the area.  I’ve been fortunate to have a good rapport with many of the local doctors.  I’ve even had the opportunity to go into a major hospital and give a presentation about chiropractic.   I frequently do lectures at church groups and other organizations on how to improve quality of life through healthy active drug-free living. My office focuses on family care. I’ve taken a lot of extra training in the areas of pediatrics and pre-and postnatal care. But I’ve been practicing for 19 years and have a lot of experience with sports- and dance-related injuries as well. We see lots of families. I recently had four generations of women — a great grandmother, a grandmother, a mom and her daughter. People also find us by by word of mouth, insurance books, because we’re near their office. They come from all over. That’s what creates the flow in my office. The information in the article is not intended to substitute for the medical expertise and advice of your healthcare provider. Headache Chiropractic Care

Studies show that women suffer severe headache or migraine three times more often than men. It is in fact a considerable problem raised in the US and Canada. One might wonder how can this greatly affect and have an impact on health care. The correlation between headaches and productivity has been tied up together with the frequent tardiness and absenteeism of employees. Many universities and clinics have already made different studies and surveys regarding the correlation. The results have proved their observations and assumptions right. The number of people that lacks understanding on the cause of migraine has been increasing. People often would take headaches not seriously. It wouldn’t even cross their mind to visit a chiropractor to get a chiropractic care. It was also observed that people suffering from severe headaches often visit a chiropractor due to treatment dissatisfaction from medical health professionals. They would rather have a chiropractic care than a medicine intake.Best treatment for headachesSimple headaches have a number of medical treatment options available. There are prevention medicines which are normally taken daily to avoid current episode or future occurrence of a headache. Prescriptions can come in the form of beta blockers, analgesics or non-steroid Imitrex and some resort to injections of narcotic in cases of emergency situations.Chiropractic treatment is a practical treatment to prevent future episodes. This includes adjustments and manipulation of cervical spine, occiput and the upper thoracic. It has actually been proven to be effective from curing the headaches. The chiropractic care is supplemented only if headaches are diagnosed to have a connection with the neck and spine.Whether or not you decide to choose what best option you have, you should not ignore or take headache for granted especially when it is recurring and chronic already. Most of the time, we would self diagnose and take pain relievers hoping that it would go away and never happen again. There are different causes and so the treatment to the specific cause must be identified in order to carefully assess what is the best thing to do.Although medicines would sometimes and generally reduce the throbbing, it is also recommended to go and see a chiropractor. It would be worthy to give yourself a proper chiropractic care.

Understanding Chiropractic care

Chiropractic is a profession that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, considering that these disorders affect normal health through the nervous system. The word “chiropractic” derives from the Greek words “cheir” and “praktkos” meaning “done by hand. The chiropractic treatment is manual therapy which manipulates the spine, other joints, and soft tissues. They believe in the philosophy that body can heal itself when the skeleton and nervous system are functioning normally. It has become a popular way for treating acute pain and spinal disorders. Further studies are being carried out in the field of ear infections, infant colic, migrane headaches and other such conditions. It also includes exercise, health and lifestyle counseling. We have two types of chiropractors . One who is an orthodox practitioner who veiws that medical diagnosis of patients complaint is not necessary for chiropractic care. They are called Straight chirpractors. The other sect is the Mixer chiropractor. They believe mixing osteopathic, medical, and chiropractic views in diagnosis. They are open to main steam of medicene. The chiropractic care is in divided opinion with the idea of subluxation. It bekieves that a vertebral subluxation affects the normal function of the body. This theory is ridiculed by most modern sceintist and medicine experts. In chiropractic care the spinal manipulation is generally safe if performed by a skilled practitioner. As a matter of fact the idea of subluxation remains untested but the chiropractors are skeptical of its clinical value. In 2005, subluxation was defined by the World Health Organization as “a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity, which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity.” Spinal adjustments or chiropractic adjustment is the common treatment done by chiroprators. Spinal manipulation therapy are the techniques of using hands to manipulate, massage, adjust, apply traction or stimulate the spinal tissues. Chiropractic care like other medical treatment, benefits from the placebo (drugs which look alike but not same, primarily used in drug trials) response. The chiropractor normally learns from the patient the history of disease, eating habits, medicines taken and the details of how injury occurred. The duration of treatment depends on the seriousness of the injury. Long-term treatment is required for a chronic or serious injury and persons with ill health. After the patient’s discharge, a follow-up treatment is essential. The chiropractor guides the patients how to use In 2005, subluxation was defined by the World Health Organization as “a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity, which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity.” correct posture and how to continue home therapy. It is common for a chiropractic patient to complain about aches, pain, mild headache, fatigue, or spasms for a few days after the treatment.
